Pontiac Illinois Surprises

Pontiac

There is more to Pontiac, Illinois than just Route 66! Labor Day weekend I was in downtown Pontiac playing tourist with friends Annie and Kelli. We took a few mornings out from the Central States Thresherman show to see what downtown Pontiac had to offer. We were pleasantly surprised!

The show was our annual Graham Bradley get together.

There was a nice array of Sears Sold tractors. I loved this cool Thrifty Farmer at the Central State Thresherman show.

Cool Thrifty Farmer.

But best of all was the group of friends that have been gathering since 2006!

Fun in Downtown Pontiac!

Last summer I stopped and toured the Route 66 and other stops. Annie, Kelli and I thought we would see what else was available. Downtown we found art, murals, a collection of little trucks, and some fun museums, and cool shops!

Our first stop was the Museum of the Gilding Arts! This wonderful museum shared the history, and craft and art of using gold! All things glittered stenciling of gold letters, gold leaf items, and more! What a fun and educational place.

Not far from this museum was the Pontiac-Oakland Automobile Museum & Resource Center. This small museum had great examples of General Motors Pontiac cars. The favorite for us was an example of one with a rear camping tent!

Then there was the doll museum and toy museum. The Pontiac Doll and Toy Museum had about every doll you could ever imagine. I felt taken back in time when I saw a Goldie Hawn doll! There was even a Princess Diana doll.

The Goldie Hawn doll is one of many.

History abounds. We even strolled through the cool Court House and loved the Art Cars that are placed all over town. There are 15 in all. My favorite was the Van Gogh themed one.

Just one of many. We even had one outside our hotel!

Then there were also wonderful murals.

Shopping!

We enjoyed stopping and shopping at vintage shops. Our favorite downtown shop was Livin’ In Color . Each of us found something fun to bring home. The owner Donna Commens is a born saleswoman. She found the perfect piece for each of us.

Touring, shopping, and even finding fun dining spots along with the tractor show fun. Lots of surprises and things to do in this Route 66 stop!
