Winter weather, being prepared if you are stuck at home!

It’s that time of year, the time that winter storms hit with the predictability of a rolled dice. The chances are not huge, but they are always there.  Is your cell phone charged?  Do you have flashlights, water, candles and plenty of food that doesn’t require a stove to cook it?  Consider having high-energy foods – peanut butter, jelly, crackers,  granola bars, trail mix on hand.  Keep ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits & vegetables. Do you have food for the pets?

Staying healthy if stuck indoors is paramount.  If  you have a health issue, make sure you have enough medication on hand to last a few days.

Without electricity you need to stay warm, hydrated and healthy.

If the electricity goes out and you plan on using an alternative form of heat, be cautious.  Fireplaces and kerosene heaters can be dangerous without proper ventilation.

If you don’t have a generator, you may want to make one room the place to stay, pile up the blankets and keep warm together!  Dress warm in layers and don’t forget about the pets, they need shelter and water in extreme conditions as well.

Get the board games out, the cards or read a good book, this is a perfect chance for family time. Stay warm and be prepared.
