Hartselle, Alabama Fun

Hartselle

I traveled to Morgan County, Alabama for the Festival of the Cranes. My friend Annie and I were hosted by Decatur Morgan County Tourism for this wonderful event.

I spent some time in the charming town of Hartselle. While there Annie and I visited Hartselle’s historic downtown. We enjoyed shopping, dining, and hitting the sites.

Historic district in downtown Hartselle.

Hartselle Facts

Our first stop was the Hartselle Historic Train Depot. The depot was built in 1914. The day we stopped the depot was closed. We still enjoyed how beautifully the depot was restored by community members. Historical displays offered history about Hartselle. The town was founded in 1870 and was incorporated in 1875. We learned, “Cotton was king from 1870 through 1960. It was the primary cash crop of area farmers.”

Besides cotton, Hartselle was also an important center for fruit, berry and timber production. The hymn “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” was written in Hartselle.

A little hot chocolate

Yummy things are at Main Street Bakery!

Shops opened at ten. Our first stop was Main Street Bakery. We had yummy hot chocolate. The shop is filled with fun gift items.

Art and shops.

We saw a few wedding shops. We admire a mural to go with the shop called Something Blue Shoppe.

Outside the shop, a young woman had found her “something blue” and was having her picture taken. We also stopped in an equine store, an antique store, and craft store and a few others along the way!

Lunch

We found an outlandish lunch place with great food and crazy decor called Eatin in the Attic! Everywhere you looked there was something fun to see.

Hartselle was a fun way to spend part of the day before heading back to enjoy the Festival of the Cranes and see the magnificent sandhill cranes!

If you get a chance to visit this, come to this fun town, or visit this marvelous festival, don’t hesitate. Decatur and Morgan County is full of culture, history, art, agriculture and an array of amazing things to bring you to this area! Mark your calendars and plan a trip soon!
