Father’s Day Ideas!

Father's Day

Father’s Day will be here before we know it! June 18th is the day to celebrate dad’s and appreciate all they do!

History of the Holiday

According to a post on History.com. the first Father’s Day was celebrated July 5, 1908, in West Virginia. This was through a sermon commemorating the men who had been victims of a coal mine explosion. Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman raised by a widower carried on the tradition. She tried to start something like the popular Mother’s Day Holiday. Her efforts paid off, and Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. The popularity of the holiday grew and in 1916, President Wilson honored the day, then in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge pressed states to celebrate the holiday!

This is not a strictly US holiday, the History.com post shared, “In other countries–especially in Europe and Latin America–fathers are honored on St. Joseph’s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday that falls on March 19.”

How will you celebrate?

Father’s Day celebrations can be as simple as spending the day with dad. They can be as elaborate as taking a trip. My dad was never big for huge parties, but he did like receiving anything to do with the sport of golf!

Here are a few ideas for the dad in your life. Whether he is a biological father, or someone that has been like a dad to you! Does your dad like to cook? I recently received the marvelous Vancasso Dutch Oven to review. I used it to cook green beans and potatoes for the trial run. It is a wonderful product that would fit well into the kitchen of any cook. It sells for a little under $80 and can be purchased directly from their Vancasso site. The Dutch Oven comes in red, blue and white!

Beautiful as well as functional.

For men of the Christian faith, try a copy of the book What Did Jesus Say…The Seven Messages From the Master by Rev. Terry Allan Christian. This is a great choice. Rev. Christian heads up the Foundation For Life Ministry. I received this book for review. I love that the text is literally Jesus words. The text is uncluttered and stands alone. The book sells for $12.99 on Amazon and is available in Christian bookstores everywhere!

Want to take dad somewhere? I just returned from a trip to Lake of the Ozarks. If the great outdoors is his cup of tea, this is a great destination. Good food, entertainment, and nature with amazing water views! Fishing, golfing, boating, hiking, and kicking back all take a front row seat.

Head to Peoria!

For those dad’s that love Midwest Travel, check out the new book 100 Things To Do In Peoria Before You Die! I received the book to review and found several new things to do in this nearby Midwestern Town. Written by Molly Crusen Bishop, the book outlines where to dine, entertainment, history and more! I want to travel to go glamping at Sankoty Lakes Resort. I want to ride on the glass elevator, and maybe even get a chance to smash a TV at Gone Mad Rage Room! Check out the book and find your cup of tea in this lovely city! There are lots of things to do in Peoria.

Simple is good too!

For my farmer husband, anytime he can get to a tractor show, he is a happy camper. In Amana, Iowa, they even have a Father’s Day tractor show! You can even do what he and his family did yesterday, create your own event. The made their own tractor drive!

Happy on a tractor!

Whether it is a homemade card, a thoughtful gift, a picnic or Sunday dinner, or a call, just take a minute to reflect on Father’s Day. Think of all your dad did for you. I can’t spend time with my dad, Bill Disque, anymore, but he will forever remain in my thoughts and heart.
