Allie and Cindy’s Fun Day in Quincy, IL!
It had been a while since my daughter Allie, and I had a day to do whatever! With the help of Holly Cain, Executive Director of See Quincy, Allie and I had an agenda. After taking a gander at the brochure, 50 Great Things to See & Do (in Three Western IL Counties) I have a list to come back too!

I had a medical appointment first thing in the morning, so it delayed our trip for a bit. But we were still able to hit the road early.
First Stop

Our first stop was Underbrinks Bakery, a place I am including in my upcoming book Unique Eats & Eateries of Illinois. Open since 1929, this is a bustling place that had the door swinging open and shut the whole time I was there.
Our fun food book will be published by Reedy Press, and I am working on this with my cousin, Carrie Steinweg. What fun eating our way through Illinois. Especially when there are wonderful places like this with delectable treats!
The bakery was booming when we stopped. I was excited to make it in time before they closed! Thank you to Amy Baur for the wonderful selection of treats that I had a hard time resisting on my way home! How do you choose a favorite from these beauties?

Beautiful Quincy
I am always taken with the beautiful old houses in Quincy. One of my fondest holiday memories is coming to a home tour at Christmas. Another favorite memory is the Pre-1930’s Ag Museum owned by ag historian Don McKinley, and his son-in-law, Marvin Huber, two great ag collectors! The town is filled with museums, history, art and fine dining. Original plans were to visit the restaurant Tiramisi. Dining here once before I recalled they were open for lunch but misjudged that they are closed for lunch on Saturdays, we truly missed out, I will have to come back again!

We found another fun spot to enjoy our meal spying a beautiful church, and mural adding to our delight.

Shopping and Winking’s Market
We did a bit of shopping walking out of Cato’s store with arms full.

Our last stop of the day was Winkings Market. This wonderful neighborhood corner grocery store is the oldest grocery store in business in town. I was charmed by the family-owned business and enjoyed interviewing Frank Winking and his two nephews. I can’t wait to share the story in our book out fall of 2026! One of my favorite things was picking up a sandwich of ham salad just the way my mom and grandma made. Yum!

What a fun day! I just need to come back and plan time to see the 47 things on the list that I missed this go round!
