Celebrating Father’s Day!

Father's Day

Father’s Day is a special time. Celebrating Father’s Day over the years, I was lucky enough to have a father that meant the world to me. He was there when I needed him, he would rather spend his time on the golf course, than get a gift, or take a trip. Like my husband Keith, all he really wanted was to have his family with him. That was his perfect gift.

This year, celebrating Father’s Day, I gave Keith a picture of him and my granddaughter graduating from the 8th grade for Father’s Day. Since I lost my dad, I really am embracing the importance of pictures.

Keith just recently took a Ladage tractor drive with friends and family making memories with his brother’s, and other family members. Making memories is what it’s all about.

Who is a dad?

Celebrating Father’s Day is not always with a dad, who is necessarily the biological father, but the one that raised, protected, and nurtured you. I hope you get to spend time with whoever that may be. In some cases, it may be mom, or even a grandma that served both important roles.

The history

According to a post on History.com. the first Father’s Day was celebrated July 5, 1908, in West Virginia. This was through a sermon commemorating the men who had been victims of a coal mine explosion. Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman raised by a widower carried on the tradition. She tried to start something like the popular Mother’s Day Holiday. Her efforts paid off, and Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. The popularity of the holiday grew and in 1916, President Wilson honored the day, then in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge pressed states to celebrate the holiday!

Happy Father’s Day I hope you found a great way to celebrate.
