Let Fall Linger!
I am writing this blog on Halloween eve. My favorite Halloween costume I ever wore was when I dressed up like Phyllis Diller one year. All I needed was to have Fang along for the ride. For those too young to know, she was a wonderful comedienne. Last night I sat on my youngest daughter’s porch and helped hand out candy. Living in the country this is a joy I don’t often get to do. I saw my grandnephew for the first time, enjoying making memories on this fun late fall event.
This past weekend the weather was amazing, and the leaves offered a vista like a postcard. To make fall linger, add some events, take a drive, and hold onto the last visages of this quick season before all the holiday fa la la arrives.
Capture a theater event!
This past month, my oldest daughter took me to the play Hadestown at the University of Illinois Springfield theater, Sangamon Auditorium. What fun with my 15-year-old granddaughter, who love, loved the story along! The story was a Greek myth placed in 20th century times. Great music and camaraderie.
Yesterday, I traveled with my hubby, family and friends to go to The Neil Diamon Musical A Beautiful Noise at the historic Fox theater. With this same group, we had the pleasure of seeing one of Niel Diamond’s last performances. Neil Leslie Diamond’s story is amazing. He has sold more than 130 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time.
Whether the theater event is a play at your local preschool, a concert at a winery, or watching your child or grandchild play in band, savor the moment!
Music is such a draw. This month CMA star Hailey Whitters performed for the Yorkville Christian FFA at Spirit Farms. The FFA group won the Rock the Crop contest, and I got the chance to cover this amazing country star in rural Illinois.
Fall is full of festivals and antique tractor events!
Tour a fun town with a view, take a drive!
For the 2nd time this year, I walked through historic St. Charles. Earlier in the summer I visited with my sister Debbie, and this trip it was with family and my sister-in-law Debbie! While there, we were enthralled with the fall foliage that will quickly disappear over the next few weeks.
Founded in 1769 as Les Petites Cotes, this means “The Little Hills”. When first settled, St. Charles was a French-Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette that first settled the area located on the banks of the Missouri River. While in town, we browsed shops and fall decorations. I spied a neat historic site I had not seen before, the reconstructed St. Charles Borromeo 1791 Log Church. Built in the French vertical log style, Debbie and I enjoyed the view of the early church.
While in town, we had great fun talking with St. Charles finest!
The St. Louis area is a mecca of great things to see and do. Earlier in the fall, my sister Debbie and I took our mom to the St. Louis Botanical gardens for her October birthday. The gardens were still lovely this time of year and soon will be filled with holiday lights.
Take a drive to enjoy the local beauty! My daughter Carrie mentioned the other day that sunsets this time of year are so amazing. Another friend said he traveled north to see fall color and found the best right in his own backyard.
Local Fun
Sometimes the best events happen right at home. Our church, Trinity Lutheran in Auburn, Illinois recently had a music Bingo night as a fund raiser. My cousin Carrie Steinweg of Chicago Foodie Sisters was down and joined mom and I at this fun event.
This time of year, fall is full of festivals, and celebrations. Whether you take a drive, indulge in a caramel covered apple, walk a trail, or attend a concert, grasp these amazing days that flee so quickly. Let fall linger.
