Mother’s Day Gift Ideas
Since mothers have eternally been a symbol of settling disputes it makes sense that the first proclamation of Mother’s Day in 1870 was by Julia Howe asking women everywhere to join for world peace. Mom’s settle differences between siblings, family members and add peace and tranquility to most homes. If you are lucky enough to still have your mom, take a minute and honor her with a call, a meal, or an event if she lives close enough. If she is far away, make sure she knows you are thinking of her.

Do you struggle with what to get mom for Mother’s Day? It helps to have a few ideas before the big day arrives! Here are a few suggestions to consider.
A book!
I received the marvelous book, Buried Treasure by Nick Greenberg. If you like a mystery, enjoy a bit of culinary fun, and quirky characters then this is the book for you.

The Amazon description shares, “Danny Pasko, a struggling Cincinnati musician, is stunned when his golden retriever unearths a peculiar object in the woods. When his chef neighbor offers a fistful of cash for the colossal truffle, his life takes an unexpected turn. As Danny’s dog continues to dig up the flavorsome fungi, his financial woes ease, and each new harvest seems to spark his musical creativity. He soon learns, however, that centuries-old truffle fraternities are extremely protective of their fungal charges. Threatened by the growing acclaim of his Ohio harvest, they demand that Danny cease and desist all mycological transactions or else. Will Danny choose to fight for his epicurean muse, or will he return to his life as a struggling musician?”
Fast moving and enjoyable, I received this book to review, and give it thumbs up! If mom is a reader, this could be a win win.
Family Cookbook
Something I got for my mother and mother-in-law many years ago was a collection of recipes from friends and family. I compiled them all into a cookbook. Since many of these family members are gone today, that book is a living memory maker, whether I am cooking up a family recipe, or just perusing the pages seeing loved ones, and what they submitted.

The families I was born into and married into include some amazing cooks. “Aunt Francis could boil water, and it would taste amazing,” my mom says. That is the same with Betty Reichert. Keith farmed for the Reichert family since he was 15 and I recall Betty’s cooking. She was so amazing. My friend Debbie Nemecek still recalls her Angel Food Cake that she remembers seeing on my kitchen table one day.

What makes this even more special is that my cousin Carrie Steinweg and I have just completed a draft of the book, Unique Eats & Eateries of Illinois. A book published by Reedy Press, it will be available this fall. What fun eating at great establishments and reminiscing about our family along the way.
Electronics

Charging is always important for your electronic devices. Keeping the phone, iPad and other devices up and running is paramount for the busy mom on the go. I love the UltraSlim Wall Charger Dual USB-C 70W. Two devices can be connected, and the charger is not bulky, and it offers temperature and short circuit protection. This is the perfect picket sized power for home or on the traveling on the road. I received this to review and love how fast devices charge.
Dining Fun
Do you have a favorite dining spot? Take mom out for a fun meal like the Gin Mill in Decatur, Illinois.

Try a featured item like the Gin Mill’s Lobster Bisque Soup. Whatever diner is mom’s favorite will do! Tip go on a day rather than Mother’s Day, you will have a more leisurely meal without the competition of everyone trying to eat at the same time.
My friend Linda and I just ate at Sapori’s Pizzeria & Italian Market in Springfield to celebrate her birthday. Besides great food, they have a little Italian market attached. A fun boutique, shop where you can find unusual food items. These are all great stops that won’t always break the bank.
Museum or shop
I recently visited the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Lincoln Museum in Springfield. This world class museum has rotating displays that make coming back over and over memorable. .

Local museums can be great fun especially if there is a museum about a topic your mother loves. There are small collectible museums here and there.
Breakfast for mom!
Sometimes you just want to make breakfast at home. Pancakes are a favorite at my house. Amasar Protein Breadfruit Pancake and Waffle mix is a healthy choice. Plant based, we enjoyed trying this fun breakfast choice!

Time
Recently my granddaughter was in a school play. My mom went and we enjoyed the play along with dinner after the fun family event. A bit of time together is as the one ad on television says, is “priceless.” All I want for Mother’s Day is time with my children, whether a call, an event, or a present, just knowing you were on their minds is all that matters.
